Most people these days have heard of feng shui. But do you really know what it means? In this week's blog post, we dive into the history and art of feng shui - with some tips to make your own home and office design more elegant, harmonious, and relaxing.

What is feng shui?

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese concept which applies to art, design, and architecture. Archaeologists have found evidence of feng shui in buildings as far back as 4000 BC.

Feng shui is based on the idea of energy in geography. As part of traditional Chinese beliefs, feng shui teaches that the universe, earth, and humans are all connected. So if you can position your home and office in the right alignment, then you will be in tune with local geography and positive forces of energy.

A feng shui practitioner will use tools such as compasses and astrological maps to find the best layout for a new home or office. While not everybody believes in the philosophy behind feng shui, it can still be used to create beautiful and attractive interior design.

Feng shui and modern home design

A lot of feng shui design is about the beauty of balance. In previous blog posts, we've talked about the ancient idea of yin and yang: two forces which balance each other perfectly. Feng shui aims to create a peaceful, positive balance in architecture, home and office design.

Feng shui is still practiced in China - and it's used by architects, landscapers and environmental scientists in the West, too. If you want to use feng shui principles in a new build, home or office renovation, ask your architect and interior designer.
